When You Want to Quit

Trusting God in Tough Times
©Ryan McGuire 2016

David was between 10 and 16 years old when he was promised to become King of Israel. He did not actually become king of Israel until he was around 30 years old (possibly 35). Seventeen to twenty-five years passed before David could sit on his throne. I’m not a Bible scholar so I’m estimating here but that’s a long time to be waiting around for God to fulfill the promise He made.

Joseph was around 17 years of age when God promised him through his dreams that Joseph’s brothers would bow before him and that He would rule over them. He declared this promise and expected it but the promise was not fulfilled until Joseph was 30 years of age.

Both Joseph and David endured horrible moments in their life. David went through many battles, women, and death before he was given the throne. Joseph was enslaved and persecuted until he could be Potipher’s right-hand man.

What I’m trying to get at is that Daddy God knows exactly when the time is right for you to step up to your throne. You may need to be molded long before you can step up to a position of power or higher leadership. It could take 10 years before your business sales go up or your art skyrockets into the hands of collectors you’ll go through a shaping period where almost every decision you make makes you feel like you’re taking steps backwards or not moving at all.

For 2 years, Tru.Works made no profit and only recently can Tru.Works make about a penny a day. Yes, only 1 penny after 2 years of hard work and determination but in this period of time, I can’t let the poor numbers get to me. I have to enjoy this moment in waiting now so that I am ready for the moment when my project blows up.

The more pressure I receive, the bigger the next challenge will get. Each step up in my projects, or work, means more responsibilities and more leadership opportunities within the company I’m working for or the business I am running.

Like Joseph, you may be intelligent and able to read and write Egyptian (which was a big deal back then) but it doesn’t mean you will use these skills today. Moses was highly intelligent and was raised as a king but never needed what he learned until he stepped down from Pharoah’s palace. It wasn’t until that exact moment when God saw it was time for Moses to lead his people out of Egypt. It wasn’t until Joseph spent years in prison listening to political conversations and depending solely on God where the Father decided to bring him out of his cell.

It may take 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years or 15 years. Everyone has to wait. You may think you’re ready to handle the unexpected growth of your business now but in reality, you cannot. Only God knows exactly when to expand your business.

In the meantime, it is wise to learn everything you can about leadership, management, and money. Talk to the Father about your struggles and read inspiring stories of people who have struggled through life before they made it big. One of my favorite examples is Steve Harvey. At one point of his life Steve Harvey was homeless and today he hosts his own show, Family Feud, and recently hosted the Miss America Pageant.

If Steve Harvey gave up when he had no home in Florida he would not be able to spread his own words of wisdom through his television show all around America.

I personally am in  the middle of a low in my life but Father God has never failed me. He will never fail you. Promise to stick by Him today and continue on working for Him and because you honor Him in your work He will fulfill His end of the bargain.
